We haven’t seen too much of Jim Carrey in the past few years, save for a couple TV cameos. Well, there was Mr. Popper’s Penguins, but you can’t really say that caters to his main fan base. It’s actually been five years since Yes Man, his last major film (aside from Mr. Popper), and let’s be frank, it wasn’t great. Come to think of it, when was his last great comedic movie? Bruce Almighty was 10 years ago, for those who even liked it. But how about those ridiculous, over-the-top characters that founded his career? Are we really going all the way back 13 years to Me, Myself & Irene?! It’s been way too long. Here’s to the Jim Carrey we all fell in love with over the years, and are hoping to find again this weekend in The Incredible Burt Wonderstone.
5) Stanley Ipkiss / The Mask[youtube http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=NmOrnjK7WtY]
I was obsessed with this movie back in the day, playing my VHS on repeat, so I can’t help but feel a little tired of The Mask, but not without admitting that he is an utterly ridiculous character. It’s also impossible not to laugh at him.
4) Lloyd Christmas[youtube http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=zcZXG4KGri8]
This movie is dumb. Very, very dumb. But in that dumbness, it is amazing and has created an indelible Jim Carrey character.
3) The Cable Guy a.k.a. Chip Douglas a.k.a. Larry Tate a.k.a. Ricky Ricardo[youtube http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=ou1EBRxLQJs]
Nobody really knows who this guy is, but that’s the best part. He’s a product of TV, so much so that his doesn’t even recognize his own identity. He’s also a really creepy obsessed stalker who can run your life into the ground if you don’t befriend him.
2) Fletcher Reede[youtube http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=geiS49_p84Q]
Fletcher Reede is hilarious because he says the things we wish we could, but also the things we’d die if we said. It’s also fun to watch him spiral into insanity when tries to resist his uncontrollable urge to tell the truth, against his desires to lie.
1) Ace Ventura[youtube http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=F7g-K0bvmOs]
This was the lead role that made Jim Carrey a household name and to date, it’s his most hilarious. It’s amazing on the premise alone: he’s an eccentric detective who finds missing animals thanks to his ability to truly understand and communicate with them.
