A young man (Cillian Murphy) wakes up alone and unattended in a London hospital to find that a blood-borne virus has infected Britain and turned most people into flesh eating zombies.
STRAIN OF ZOMBIE
Angry, blood-vomiting zombies. In fact, the virus that has caused their affliction is described simply as “rage”.
HOW IT FLESHED OUT THE GENRE
Well, I hadn’t really paid much attention to the zombie genre, to be honest, until I started watching The Walking Dead, and 28 Days Later’s opening is suspiciously similar to the pilot of that show, except in London instead of Atlanta. From what I can tell from my research, however, this is the first time zombies have moved quickly on screen, rather than the stilted shuffle we typically see. And, the movie has been said to be responsible for bringing the zombie genre back to life (pun fully intended).
(UN)DEAD ON DEATH SCENE
A zombie that is being kept as a kind of pet/science experiment is released by the protagonist in order to save his girlfriend and a young girl they’ve been travelling with from being raped.[youtube http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=eunaclr-WgU]
