Is there really anything you can say about this movie that hasn’t already been said? But for those of you who have been in hibernation for the past year, I’ll fill you in. First and foremost, it’s directed in 3D by ballroom and glamour extraordinaire, Baz Lurhmann (who also did my favourite movie of all time Moulin Rouge—also with a beyond brilliant soundtrack). Leonardo DiCaprio takes the lead as the dreamy Jay Gatsby, Carey Mulligan as his love interest and Tobey Maguire leads us through it as Nick Carraway (plus, Amitabh Bachan is Meyer Wolfshiem!). It looks gorgeous, extravagant and highly, highly engrossing.
It is utmost important to highlight that Jay-Z produced this soundtrack, which means a whole lot. He’s a superstar producer and recording artist with very respectable creative choices. The tracks feature several popular but creatively daring artists, brilliantly-remixed covers and an overall gloss of jazz and electro-swing (could there be a more perfect venue for electro-swing?!). Needless to say, it is AMAZING.
(By no means an exhaustive list, just my faves.)
- “100$ Bill” by Jay Z
- “Back to Black” by Beyoncé x André 3000
- “Bang Bang” by will.i.am
- “A Little Party Never Killed Nobody (All We Got)” by Fergie, Q-Tip and GoonRock
- “Love Is the Drug” by Bryan Ferry with The Bryan Ferry Orchestra
- “Over the Love” by Florence and the Machine
- “Love Is Blindness” by Jack White
And one not on the soundtrack:
- “Happy Together” by Filter
