This list was a hard one for two reasons: 1) I couldn’t include some of my favourite stand-alone sci-fi films or TV series, 2) I had to take all the films in the series into consideration even when I didn’t want to (I’m looking at you Alien: Resurrection). But after a lot of consideration, I think I’ve got my personal fave five sci-fi series. Honourable mentions: Planet of the Apes, Star Trek, Terminator and Bill and Ted’s Excellent Adventure.
5) Back to the Future
Series includes: Back to the Future, Back to the Future Part II and Back to the Future III
Everyone loves the perfect pairing of our sassy hero Marty McFly and his loveable mad scientist sidekick Doc. Though the original is by far the best, the whole series is super fun, light-hearted, nostalgic and science-y. Time travel is the focus, but friendship (and a dash of accidental almost-incest) is the real lesson.
4) Jurassic Park
Series includes Jurassic Park, The Lost World: Jurassic Park, and Jurassic Park III
Not only do these films have great casts (hello Jeff Goldblum and Laura Dern) but they’ve got big budgets, epic soundtracks and Spielberg. Clone dinos freaked the shit out of me when I saw them in ’93 and I’m still impressed by them today.
3) The Matrix
Series includes The Matrix, The Matrix Reloaded and The Matrix Revolutions
These movies are the greatest example of new millennium fear. Machines/robots are trying to control you and/or kill you, but don’t worry! A bad-ass group of kung-fu expert hippies will save you and look damn good doing it. The Matrix trilogy is the philosophy major of the sci-fi kids; it’s full of new-age metaphors and lessons but with a metal edge… oh, and guns.
2) Star Wars
Series includes: Episode I, II, III, IV, V and VI
I’m including the prequels, don’t argue. The original three are the ultimate nerd movies of all nerd movies and the ultimate franchise with a crazy amount of merch and spin-offs. The movies as a series are really cohesive and complex, but also really fun, family-friendly and truly epic. I don’t need to explain how great they are but I’m putting them as my #2 because of the unneeded/ regrettable prequels of course.
Series includes: Alien, Aliens, Alien 3, Alien Resurrection and Prometheus (I’m not including any Alien vs. Predator)
This is my favourite sci-fi series by far. I watched the first two back to back with friends and then we ran out to rent the next two immediately. Nothing is scarier than an invasion into your body/very cramped spaceship, I mean… yikes. The original is perfect in every way, social/gender commentary, disgusting aliens and serious suspense. The rest are good in their own right, all a little different but all together are a great series. Prometheus was the odd man out for sure being a prequel and years later, but it was a great modern addition to the series. Side note: Ripley is my all time favourite sci-fi hero.
