BY ASHLEY KOWALEWSKI
WHAT IT’S ABOUT: Two rival magicians try to out-perform each other by creating the ultimate illusion, but their ambitions come at the expense of their personal lives, loved ones and morals.
WHO’S IN IT: Christian Bale, Hugh Jackman, Michael Caine, Scarlett Johansson, David Bowie, Rebecca Hall
WHEN IT CAME OUT: 2006
HOW COME YOU HAVEN’T HEARD OF (OR JUST SEEN) IT: You’ve probably seen or heard of this at some point, though it was likely not since it came out. The Prestige was released right around the same time as The Illusionist, and unfortunately for the former, the latter totally stole its thunder. This movie is never on TV–pity–so unless it’s on your radar, you probably haven’t seen it in a long time.
WHY YOU NEED TO WATCH IT IMMEDIATELY:
- Christian Bale, Michael Caine and Christopher Nolan together = movie magic.
- A storyline that is paradoxically simple and complicated at the same time. A perfect example of how a magician has you guessing right until the last “aha” moment.
- Twists, turns, challenged morals, death, affair and love, all wrapped into one neat Christopher Nolan-tied bow.
- If you haven’t seen it, those constant feelings of “how did they do it?”, and if you have watched it, the joy of watching it all come together again.
