BY MICHELLE MEDFORD (WITH MARISSA MEDFORD)
My sis is one of my very best friends. I can’t even begin to count our inside jokes, ridiculous childhood memories and the times she has had my back. She’s also one of the few people I still feel like 7-year-old with (7 was my golden age–don’t ask, I can’t explain; I just thought it was my best time of my life, back then). We still play SNES together, leave the last cookie for each other, and sometimes, we even colour with chalk. But one of our favourite traditions is watching Disney movies together. Last summer, we tried to marathon all our Disney VHS tapes, to mild success. Much of the magic in Disney movies isn’t just in what’s on the screen but who you (re)watch and cherish them with. Looking forward to watching Monsters University together on opening day, we teamed up to count down our favourite Pixar movies.
We both agree that this is one of the most underrated Pixar movies of all time. Okay, she says, “I don’t think any Pixar movies are underrated,” which is true, but if there had to be one, this would be it.
Our favourite moment: When food critic Anton Ego is transported back to his memories of first eating ratatouille as a young boy.
This is the movie that struck a chord with everyone and reminded us all that Pixar movies aren’t just for kids. Through a simple story, it was a deeply moving portrait of friendship and healing.
Our favourite moment: The beginning. Obviously. *tear*
3) Finding Nemo
Who doesn’t love Nemo? (Or as my niece calls him, and I do too now, Memo.) We almost didn’t rewatch this one last year because we’ve already seen it so many times, but we couldn’t help it.
My favourite moment: Deb and her sister Flo.
Her favourite moment:
Nemo: Are you all right?
Dory: I don’t know where I am… I don’t know what’s going on. I think I lost somebody but I, I can’t remember… and I can’t remember…
Nemo: It’s OK, it’s OK. I’m looking for somebody too. Hey, we can look together.
Dory: I’m Dory.
Nemo: I’m Nemo.
Dory: Nemo… that’s a nice name!
2) Monsters Inc.
This is my personal favourite on the list. It’s not just my favourite Pixar movie, but I think it’s one of the funniest movies of all time, and in large part due to the comedic talent that is Billy Crystal(‘s voice).
My favourite moment: “Put that thing back where it came from or so help me…”
Her favourite moment: Any moment with the two nerdy, teenage janitors.
1) Toy Story trilogy
We had to group the trilogy together, or else more than half of our list would be made up of Toy Story movies. This is my sister’s all-time favourite. It’s one of the cleverest children’s film series ever with unforgettable characters and moments that never disappoint regardless of how many times you’ve rewatched them (and we have many, many times).
My favourite moment: In Toy Story, when Rex yells, “He killed Buzz!”
Her favourite moment: That heart-wrenching moment at the end of the series when the toys face imminent, firey doom.
