With Getaway starring Selena Gomez out this week, we count down our five favourite former Disney stars.
5) Zac Efron
He definitely has his head in the game! Since finishing off one of the most successful Disney channel movie series ever (High School Musical), Zac has had starring roles in the hilarious 17 Again, The Lorax, The Lucky One, and The Paperboy. He’s quickly shown the world that there is more to him than just a singing and dancing teenager, and his proving himself to be quite the serious actor. Expect to see a lot more from Zac coming soon. He has four movies scheduled to debut in 2014 and another at the end of this year.
This girl had a successful career long before her days as a Disney darling starring as Olivia Kendall on The Cosby Show from 1989-1992 and as Nicole Lee on Hangin’ with Mr. Cooper from 1993-1997. However, Raven’s career sky-rocketed in 2003 when she scored her own TV series on the Disney Channel playing Raven Baxter on That’s So Raven. The show ran from 2003-2007 and elevated Raven to the height of her fame. Starring on the show also landed her guest spots on The Suite Life of Zack and Cody, Cory in the House and voiceover work in The Proud Family, Filmore! and Kim Possible. Since then, she has done additional voiceover work for Disney and stared in the ABC Family series State of Georgia. You can currently catch her on Broadway starring in Sister Act: The Musical.
3) Selena Gomez
Though she got her start on Barney & Friends, Selena is quickly becoming a star to watch. When she landed the role of Alex Russo on Wizards of Waverly Place in 2007, she was elevated to a new level of fame. The show ran until 2012 and during that period she earned guest spots on Hannah Montana and The Suite Life on Deck. She also starred in Another Cinderella Story and Princess Protection Program. Since the end of her run on the Disney channel, she has become a major success in the music industry and has starred in Spring Breakers and the animated film Hotel Transylvania. With two more movies scheduled to be released this year and another in 2014, Selena is only at the beginning what I’m sure will be a long career.
2) Hilary Duff
I think it’s safe to say that Hilary Duff is one of the most beloved and popular Disney stars of all time. Not only does she have a successful career, but she’s managed to maintain it with little to no scandal. Hilary made her film debut in Casper Meets Wendy in 1998 and in 2001; she scored her own TV series in which she played the title character, Lizzie McGuire. Though the show only ran until 2004, it has remained wildly popular in syndication. (Don’t tell me you don’t watch the re-runs at 1:00am when you can’t sleep on the Family Channel!) The show also had a successful movie entitled The Lizzie McGuire Movie come out in 2003. The success of the show earned Hilary roles in many films, including Cadet Kelly, Agent Cody Banks, Cheaper by the Dozen, A Cinderella Story, Raise Your Voice, and The Perfect Man. Hilary also had a recurring guest role on the TV series Gossip Girl in 2009 playing Olivia Burke. Though she is not as high profile these days, Hilary is still hard at work. Along with being a wife and mother, she has also published a trilogy of YA novels entitled Elixir. She also has a role in the film Flock of Dudes, which is to be released in 2014.
1) Shia LaBeouf
Shia LaBeouf has elevated himself to ‘Movie Star’ status with his role as Sam Witwicky in the Transformers series. However, let’s not forgot that it was on Disney that he got his start, playing the leading role of Louis Stevens on the massively popular TV series Even Stevens. The show ran from 2000-2003 and Shia’s role in it landed him film roles in Tru Confessions (try and watch that without crying, I dare you.) Holes, The Even Stevens Movie, The Greatest Game Ever Played, Distrubia, Indiana Jones and the Kingdom of the Crystal Skull and many more. With two more films coming out this year, and another scheduled for release in 2014, Shia’s stardom is only continuing to rise.
