Role in horror community: Screenwriter
Claim to fame: You may not have heard her name, but if you’re a horror fan at all, you’ve heard of Ginger Snaps, the Canadian cult classic about a she-wolf who hungers for teenage boys, in the worst of ways. Karen Walton penned the beloved film.
Weapon of choice: One giant metaphor: Puberty is lycanthropy.
Why she’s bloody brilliant: Ginger Snaps is one of the most original horror movies I’ve ever seen. It’s very feminist, with two main strains: A girl’s gotta do what a girl’s gotta do, and sometimes a girl needs to subvert her sexual vulnerability. Like I mentioned, it’s also perfect for literary lovers, allowing you to explore a creative metaphor for puberty. With Ginger Snaps, she kick-started a Canadian horror series with strong characters that have lasted and continue to garner acclaim. Fun fact: She also did some stunt work on Prom Night II while she was in university–sounds like our kinda gal![youtube http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=Zoa1A987A_k]
