Santa will have ‘A’ new little helper this holiday season. According to the president of ABC Family, that Christmas episode of Pretty Little Liars is definitely coming our way this December, and it will be the kind of prickly present fans having been waiting for.
“Nothing says Christmas like a text from A!” Tom Ascheim quipped at 2014 Television Critics Association Summer Press Tour on Tuesday after confirming the status of the holiday special, which will be featured as part of ABC Family’s month-long Christmas programming line-up.
Although PLL is no stranger to holiday episodes, having held Halloween specials for the last several years, this is the first time that we’ll get to how Rosewood celebrates the “most wonderful time of the year.” Seeing as PLL has a girl-powered horror slant, we can only hope for an homage to Black Christmas (the original, NOT the remake), with Aria (Lucy Hale), Hanna (Ashley Benson), Emily (Shay Mitchell) and Spencer (Troian Belissario) headed to a Hollis sorority house to get terrorized by A, or some other mysterious figure.
This is all Spencer-style speculation for now, but considering that the team behind PLL seems to be made up of Cinefilles already (see: this past season’s film noir episode, the constant tributes to Hitchcock), it wouldn’t surprise us if they went that route. It would certainly set this episode apart from the other seasonal tributes planned for this year (we’ll Xmas eps for Baby Daddy, Melissa and Joey and The Fosters). And as per Ascheim, we’re not to worry that PLL‘s naughty vibe will turn nice just to suit the holiday.
“It’s still going to be in character, and somehow, you’ll know it’s Christmas,” he explained to Cinefilles in a one-on-one scrum after the panel.
As for the reasoning behind the new special, Ascheim said it all all came from showrunner Marlene King and her team. “I just think creatively they wanted to try something new,” he told Cinefilles. “Halloween is so natural, so I think they just wanted to challenge themselves with a new holiday.”
