WHERE THIS EVIL HAILS FROM: 1972’s The Last House On The Left
WHY THIS EVIL MADE ME FILLE THE FEAR: Okay, here’s the thing you have to understand. I am an absolute horror fanatic. Have been for years. So I’m not bragging or exaggerating when I say that nothing really scares me anymore. Really, almost nothing does. Nothing except the original Last House On The Left, that is.
Last House on the Left is absolutely the most brutal and mentally taxing film I’d ever seen. I am whole heartedly of the mindset that it’s the realistic things that are the scariest. And there has never been any scarier villain in any horror movie than Krug’s gang.
It’s one thing to have heartless, monotonous villains like Jason Voorhees or Michael Myers. They’re less human, more monster. Krug and his gang are regular people who should know better, who do know better, but simply don’t care. They are absolutely ruthless, heartless and insane. The brutality with which they treat the girls they kidnap really messed me up for a long time. The fact that on any given day I could be walking down the street and run into people like Krug, Weasel and Sadie, the fact that there are actually people that evil in the real world and could also have children that they’re raising to be this heartless and destructive, really impacted my emotions.
Basically, I have never been so terrified and so absolutely disgusted. And if you don’t believe me, just watch the pure joy and exhilaration on their faces as they murder a young girl.
HOW THIS EVIL STILL DOES: Well, this is easy. The fact that I’ve never been able to bring myself to watch this movie again says it all. It messed with my head just that much.
I bought that movie, watched it once and then threw the DVD away because I didn’t want something that brutal in my possession. Even now, when I tried to finally bring myself to watch it again for this October, I tried to psych myself up for it, even went so far as to actually rent it again on my Kindle, but could not bring myself to press play. It is just that frightening and disturbing.
