Wishing and hoping you’ll get to keep spending your Tuesday nights with Jess Day and Mindy Lahiri? You might have to keep at it, as Fox Television Group chairman and CEO Dana Walden says neither has earned a renewal yet and whether or not they do relies on you.
“We’re just gonna see,” Walden said when a journalist asked her about the future of The Mindy Project at a scrum following an executive panel at the 2015 Television Critics Association Winter Press Tour on Saturday. “You know what? We’re hopeful that fans are going to respond to this storyline and that we can build a little bit greater audience on that show, which would be really rewarding and I know would make a lot of fans very happy.”
She continued, “We love Mindy. She’s a great talent, we have loved working with her. Everyone at the network feels so strongly about her. She’s that person who goes the extra mile. She’s willing to anything to support that show. Creatively, I think that show’s in a very good place. There’s some very exciting storylines coming up towards the back half of the season that I think are going to energize the fan base.”
Walden seems to feel the same way about New Girl creatively, noting that she thinks the show is in an “excellent place” this year. “We’re proud of that show,” she explained to Cinefilles during the scrum. “We went to Liz Meriwether at the beginning of the season and talked about getting back to the roots of the show–those relationships, those core people–and not being so much about a single relationship. That, I think, lost a bit of the feel of the ensemble.”
Whether or not New Girl can keep up that change of pace is to be seen, but according to Walden, it’s doing decently in numbers, which could help it make it to Season 5.
“Over seven days, that show grows an incredible over 70 per cent,” she noted in the scrum. “Over 30 days, it grows a 135 per cent. So, as content owners, we’re really happy with that show.”
One comedy Fox is definitely happy with is Brooklyn Nine-Nine. The show received another renewal at the executive panel, having taken to its new Sunday night timeslot swimmingly this year. Mindy, Jess, maybe it’s time to take some notes.
