Starting today, October 1, Cinefilles is holding Galloween (like Halloween, but with gals!), a month of posts, giveaways, events and other surprises honouring women in horror. We’ll be treating you readers to assorted goodies about female characters and filmmakers we admire, not to mention a few pieces on what we can do to help these ladies continue to slaughter expectations within the genre.
To give you a taste of the empowerment to come, check out today’s ode to one of the most important, yet forgotten icons of horror: Debra Hill. And look out for our new horror column, She Screams!, in which Managing Editor Emily talks about loving horror and also being a girly girl. We’ll also have interviews with some upcoming and established final girls, including the cast of The Final Girls, and insights from indie filmmakers on writing for women in horror. And finally, if you’re in Toronto on October 14, you can come celebrate Galloween with us in person as we screen Ginger Snaps at the Carlton Cinema with our pals The MUFF Society (for full event details, click here)!
If that isn’t enough to sell you on Galloween, can we just say that we can pitched this idea to Amy Poehler, creator of our other fave holiday (Galentine’s Day) last fall and you can see her response to the right.
Point is, HAPPY GALLOWEEN, GHOULS AND BOYS! We can’t wait to spend this month celebrating some of our fave horror heroines, on screen and off, and we hope you’ll come back every year after for more girly, gory horror fun.
